Nothing much to report today, a pretty standard workout but the sets of eight of close grip were rather difficult at this weight. I’ve ignored these for too long and really need to get some close grip work in before this meet.
Standing shoulder presses are new to me and kind of fun but I did them to my chest and not behind the head which I’m going to change to next time I try these.
That is a huge amount of weight on the close grip. Do you use wrist straps? If not your wrists must be super tough to take that much weight.
Great job on the close grip benches. I have to get back on those, too, it’s been too long.
Ryan what do you think you will be using for a deadlift opener… do you wear a deadlift suit or pull in a singlet?
Your training looks good, you’re definitely built to squat 750+ someday.
Gords: I don’t use wrist wraps on close grip but when I’m benching heavy I wear them. I have fair sized wrists.
Alberto: That’s how I felt before going into this workout.
David: Right now I think I’ll open with 517/235. The plan is if I can squat 638/290, and bench: 462/210 then I’ll make my third deadlift 566.5/257.5 which would give me my qualifier. I only pull in a singlet now but I did just get a Metal Viking Deadlifter however I don’t have time to get used to the suit and it only exaggerates my lockout weakness.
Thanks for the complement.
I’m a big fan of seated Behind the necks starting at the top. The reason I wouldn’t recommend standing is b/c unless you have healthy, fexible shoulders, the starting position on the neck is killer on your rotater cuffs IMHO. But if you are flexible and have healthy shoulders, fire away!
So you think the first press behind the head is the killer? What if i started it in front and pressed it up then brought it down behind my head for the reps? That way I’d still be starting at the top.
That sounds better. It’s just that low starting position when pressing off the neck that I’ve had problems with.
cool, you should definitely invest the time in getting your DL suit tailored just right and “balls up to your throat” tight as mine is… I honestly think I will get 80-90 pounds from it if my grip can hold… being 6′4″ though I have nice long fingers that usually do the trick.
Unfortunately I also have long arms and legs that screw the squat and bench but thats another can of worms!
