Deadlift Analysis and Winnipeg Video

Anyone who has read this page for any time knows that deadlifts have always been a sore spot for me, I’ve never been able to pull what I really think I should. Well this meet in Winnipeg went much better and going over the video I have an idea why.
First here is a picture of my attempted 577.6/262 pull in Calgary back in January:
262.5 pull in calgary
You can see how pitched forward I am, my head is down, my chest is pointing to the floor and my ass is high. This never looked weird to me until now…

544.5/247 pull in Winnipeg
247.5 pull in winnipeg
What a difference, my head and chest are up and my ass is way down there. I’m in much more of a squat stance than the Calgary pull.

566.6/257 pull in Winnipeg
257.5 pull in winnipeg
The same thing here, my ass is a little higher but nothing like Calgary, and I stay in that position as I pull it up and into lockout.

I’ve YouTubed my video from Winnipeg. The video was actually created by Kain, a fellow lifter.

  • Looks good. As you say, the pulls have definitely improved. What’s the next deadlift goal?

  • Keaner:

Great video summary, I liked the ‘Footage Missing’ shot. Looks like you have your deadlift issue fixed too.

  • Stinn:

Scott: I want to pull 595/270 by year end, I think i have 584/265 in me now so that should be possible.

Keaner: Kain does a good job making his “montages”.

  • Jon:

It was like night and day watching your control over bench 2 versus bench 1. Your speed off the ground with the deads is absolutely amazing. If you can just fix that very top lockout issue, you’ll be mid 6’s pretty quickly.

  • Jon:

By the way, how do you think this setup change will effect the lockout?

  • good analysis stinn. That was kind of my problem with conventional awhile ago, but I’ve managed to drop my butt down and I think it’s help a lot. I just need to work on breaking the ground!

  • Stinn:

Jon: I think it will fix most of the lockout issues as I’m starting with my shoulders back further than before. I think I’ll always fail a deadlift at lockout though, I don’t know what’s worse at lockout or off the floor…

Chris: The 8 weeks of oly lifting I did really helped me with off the floor power. You should try tossing in my power cleans or high pulls for 6-8 weeks and see how it helps you.

  • Stinn: I don’t know if anyone else had this problem, but the YouTube video didn’t buffer very well and it stopped every 5 seconds or so for a few seconds and continued. I’d rather have a wmv file, just my 2 cents.

You sure got those deadlifts up fast. All of your lifts look very good. Congratulations on a great day.

  • Stinn:

Not sure if it’ll be any better but it’s on google video too http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3194672242903093080&q=stinn
I know you can download it from there. The WMV file is about 50mb so I didn’t want to host it if I didn’t have to.

  • Alberto Caraballo:

As good as your other lifts were, those deadlifts were FUCKING FAST!!! Damn!!!

  • mike:

Nice lifting bro!! Getting real strong.

  • chris:

Awesome job Stinn, your DL form looked way better than the before one. Congrats on some great numbers!!!
